Laundry! Caffeine! Fast Food! American Idiot’s Thomas Hettrick Reveals His Tips for Life on the Road
Thomas Hettrick in the national tour of 'American Idiot'
'This show requires so much energy, so everyone usually looks for somewhere cool to eat in between shows.'

As Tunny in the national tour of American Idiot, Thomas Hettrick plays a disillusioned suburbanite who leaves his home for the big city and enlists in the army. His service to Uncle Sam opens his eyes to real-life horrors and sends him soaring above the stage in an “extraordinary” sequence. In contrast to his stage work, life on tour is probably a cakewalk. Hettrick filled out our questionnaire about life on the road, from overpacking to where to find him between shows. Check it out.

The five items I can’t live without on the road:
1. Guitar
2. iPod
3. Kindle
4. iPad
5. Cell phone

The most efficient packing lessons I’ve learned are:
You should pack lots of underwear, undershirts and socks. You can always wear jeans and shirts again if you don’t have time to do laundry, so make sure you’ve got the essential undergarments taken care of. I also tend to lose socks all the time, so I make sure to bring way too many, just in case.

My favorite roadside stop is:
I know it’s bad for you and everything, but I really love all kinds of fast food. McDonalds, Burger King, Subway—it’s all good to me. However, my favorite is definitely Dunkin Donuts. I’m a caffeine addict and it gives me my fix.

My favorite place to go between shows:
Anywhere that has food! This show is so physically demanding and requires so much energy, so everyone usually looks for somewhere cool to eat in between shows. Protein and carbs are so important on those two-show days.

My sure-fire way of decompressing from the show is:
Grabbing a drink or two with the cast. I feel really lucky to be a part of a show where everyone gets along as well as we do, so getting to hang out with these crazy Idiots is definitely my favorite way to relax after a performance.

See Hettrick in American Idiot at the Ohio Theatre from March 19 through March 24.
